Important Information About Stair Kits
All of our kits are designed for a standard joist or truss system that is 24” on center. This means that the joist/trusses measure approximately 22 to 22.5” inside to inside. If your situation requires significantly narrower or wider stairs (1.5”+ wider or narrower than the Standard Stairs.)
Width of Safe Step Standard Stairs – Our Standard Stairs require ½” of clearance between the joists/trusses and the stair stringers. This means that if you have an inside width between the joist/trusses the stairs will have the following dimensions: 21” outside to outside of the stringers which are made of 2×6” standard boards (nominally 1.5” X 5.5”) Thus the two stringers combined measure 3” total plus 1/2” clearance required between the stringers and joists leaves the steps to be 18” wide. This is our Standard Kit Dimensions regarding width. Thus our Standard Kit has stairs that are 21” wide with steps that are 18” wide.
Length of Standard Stairs
8’ ceiling height – the Standard Stringer length will be 10’5” long
9’ ceiling height – The Standard Stringer length will be 11’5” long
10’ ceiling height – The Standard Stringer length will be 12’5” long
If your application requires significant variations from either the width or length of the Standard Stairs, you will need to notify us of your application dimension so we can calculate the gas shock pressure for your application.
There is a $150 custom gas shock charge for this. This charge is to cover the additional costs of calculating your shock pressure, ordering and paying for custom shock and shipping to us for the shocks and shipping of the shocks to you.
Metal Safe Step Stair Kits also utilize the same dimensions. If you want metal stairs and your requirements are outside the Standard Dimensions, please contact us as we would need to have the steps custom made for your application plus the gas shocks as well. We do not have standard charges for this as each application will be quoted individually based upon your specifications
Customer Information Sheet
Safe Step Stairs are not a one size fits all application. We custom assemble each kit for each customer based upon the customer’s specific application. This means that a kit for your home may not fit your neighbor’s home. To ensure that you get the kit that is correct for your application we require some information from you regarding your home, the orientation, truss/rafter size, hinge placement, rafter compression and tension web placement in relation to the stairs, temperatures the stairs will be exposed to etc.
The Customer Information Request form must be completed to ensure that the kit you receive will work for your application. Failure to send us this information or accurate information will result in delays and problems when you go to install your kit with the stairs likely not fitting or working properly. This will require you to contact us so we can troubleshoot the problem and then send you the components that are correct for your application. TO AVOID THIS AND ADDITIONAL COSTS/DELAYS PLEASE GIVE US THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IN AS MUCH DETAIL AS POSSIBLE.
What is Included in a Kit?
Wood kits include only the metal components to build a set of Safe Step Stairs. They do not include any wooden components; you will need to source those locally. The Standard wooden kit is based upon the use of spruce. It is important that you use spruce or a wood that is of similar weight. If you are using pine or some other heavier wood, you need to let us know as the additional weight needs to be calculated and custom shocks will be required. Again, this is an additional fee of $150 for this service. It is important that you do not try to use our standard kit with different weight wood as the additional weight will cause the stairs to not close properly and could open on their own unexpectedly. The Wood kit comes complete with all the hardware and full instructions on how to build and install a set of stairs. No wood.
The metal stairs are a set of stairs in a box. You will need some hand tools and power drills etc. The metal stairs come complete with every component you need to install the stairs to be fully functional including all the plywood panels for closing the stair bottom.
